GENERAL WADE'S MILITARY BRIDGE: MONITORING OF MOVEMENT FROM 1981 TO 1987

In 1980 it was thought that wade's bridge at aberfeldy, Scotland, a five arch stone bridge constructed in 1733, was to be subjected to heavy traffic with the opening of a local barytes mine. The wolfson bridge research unit, on behalf of the transport and Road Research Laboratory, carried out six surveys between 1982 and 1987 to monitor the condition of the bridge. Measurements were made of any change in shape of the structure by means of surveying. Small brass markers were attached to the bridge from which levels were taken. Markers were also attached to the spandrel walls to measure horizontal movement. No statistically significant movements were recorded, although weathering had deteriorated the condition of the bridge. The report also describes work relating to the contract: (1) software has been developed for arch analyses and assessment; and (2) small scale models used to examine three dimensional behaviour of arch bridges. A discussion on the need for further work is included.
