LORRY ROUTING

This report examines the current situation regarding lorry routing nationally, in London and in each of the south east counties, and the advantages to be derived from the definition of a national or more detailed local lorry route network - problems of achieving compatibility are discussed, particularly as regards the hierarchy of lorry routes (national routes, county routes and access routes), vehicle categories, enforcement (difficulties of categorising and identifying vehicles, problem of arriving at a precise definition of "access", selection of positive or negative methods of enforcement); signing of routes, and development of ancillary facilities. The need for a uniform approach in the implementation of the policy is stressed together with the usefulness of drawing up regional maps and using A phased approach as regards the process of implementation itself.
