MOTOR SERVICE AREAS

This article reports on a discussion of requirements for motorway service areas at the Dec 1988 meeting of the New Zealand national roads board (nrb). A comprehensive study, completed in 1975, considered four possible sites for a motorway service area near auckland, New Zealand. Although one of these sites was recommended by the nrb, work on it was shelved due to the reduction of traffic growth in the 1970's. During the 1980's road traffic growth was restored to its previous levels in this area, and proposals for motorway service areas were revived. At the meeting, it was agreed that services should be allowed in appropriate motorway locations, and that proposals should be sought for the development of motorway service areas on the western and eastern sides of the auckland southern motorway at the pahurehure inlet.
