QUALITY OF RESPONSE ON THE NEL ROAD SIMULATOR

The Nel Road Simulator was used to compare the response of a small saloon car driven along a section of a straight road of known profile with its response to excitation by A synthesized road profile obtained from the digital record of the profile of the test road. Quality of response was good at most of the points instrumented, but excessive roll of the vehicle on the road simulator induced a large lateral response and inaccuracies in response at other points. The unsprung mass of the vehicle resonated at a higher frequency on the road simulator than on the road. This was attributed to the non-rolling tires having greater stiffness than rolling tyres.
