SINGAPORE MASS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM: CONSTRUCTION. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

The paper is introduced by a brief description of the regulation of construction in Singapore. Reference is made to the applicable legislation and its enforcement. Ground conditions are reviewed in the context of their influence on the choice of construction methods and equipment. The principal features of underground station construction are given. The tunnel works are dealt with in some detail because these are of special interest in the densely developed central area of Singapore. Cut-and-cover tunnelling used various support methods with both conventional and underwater excavation. Bored tunnelling embraced full face mechanized machines at one extreme and greathead shields with hand excavation at the other. A comparison and analysis of the results is given. New Austrian tunnelling method variants are described. Tunnelling aids are described in general terms and details given of instances of special interest. The use of compressed air and particularly its medical supervision is referred to. The specified construction method for viaducts is described and the various launching gantry types developed by contractors described. Casting yard layouts are given and the principal conclusions derived from the Singapore mass rapid transit corporation's experience in these aspects are given. The main elevated station types are described and the various construction advantages and disadvantages given. The three depots posed significant foundation problems and the contrasting construction techniques required are detailed. Track-laying techniques and rates are described for the three types of permanent way used.(a) see also IRRD abstracts nos 823417 and 823418.
