A650/A629 AIREDALE ROUTE - THE FIRST TWO SECTIONS

This article describes work on the Airedale Route, a new trunk road scheme about 17 km long, situated to the North West of Bradford, in the North of England. The new road will form part of the A650/A629 Doncaster-Keighley-Kendal trunk road, replacing some of its existing sections. The route was approved in November 1982, and the scheme for its construction has three sections, of which the first two sections (the most westerly) were recently completed. To avoid extensive urban development on the valley sides, Section One runs along the valley floor, close to the River Aire, through alluvial pasture land which is often flooded. It is carried on embankments 2 to 4 m high, constructed with rockfill to a level above maximum recorded flood levels; special designs were required because of the weak substrata. The road is a dual two-lane all-purpose highway to 120 kph design standard; each carriageway is 7.3 m wide with 1 m hard trips. Section Two runs along low-lying land to the South of the Aire, and passes through extensive urban development. The ground in this area is mostly soft silty sandy clay overlying sand, gravel and soft clay. The section is 3 km long with dual 7.3m wide carriageways, with lighting provided throughout. At its eastern end, the highway crosses the Aire by a 3-span steel and concrete composite bridge.
