SOLIDS PUMPING THE SOLUTION TO TRANSPORT PROBLEMS IN THE CHANNEL TUNNEL PROJECT. SECOND INTERNATIONAL TUNNELLING SYMPOSIUM, MUNICH, 12 APRIL 1989

This paper discusses the systems used by the French tunnelling company Transmanche-Link (TML) for removing muck from the borings of the Channel Tunnel. After many months of tests, TML decided on a Putzmeister mucking system, which had been used successfully in the Metro de Lille, France and in many other tunnels. Until about 100m of tunnel had been drilled, it was necessary to use Putzmeister's temporary muck pumping installation, which is essentially a system for transporting viscous slurry. After that, the Putzmeister central pump mucking station at the access shaft was brought into operation. When all five Tunnel Boring Machines are working, they move about 700 cu m per hour into the muck comminuting and pumping station at the bottom of the access shaft. The paper ends by giving some details of the equipment supplied by Putzmeister to TML for its different projects. The German title for this paper is as follows: "Der Pumpen von Feststoffen - die Loesung fuer Transportprobleme im Aemelkanal-Tunnelprojekt".
