The controls on the instrument panels inside cars become increasingly more sophisticated with the incorporation of computer technology. In this article, the attention and memory demands of new instrument panel concepts such as voice synthesised messages, head up displays, head level infinity displays, and visual image displays, are highlighted. This article is adapted from one entitled 'Human factors technology' in Automotive Engineering, 1988, v96 n10, p96-101.
