ANALYSIS AND FOLLOW-UP METHOD FOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECORDING IN A HOSPITAL
SJUKHUSBASERAT ANALYS- OCH UPPFOELJNINGSSYSTEM FOER TRAFIKOLYCKOR OCH TRAFIKSKADADE: DELRAPPORT 4 I PROJEKTET SJUKHUSBASERAD TRAFIKSKADEREGISTRERING I GOETEBORG
Recording of traffic injuries at the casualty department of goeteborg East hospital began in 1979. One object was to complement the poor official statistics and to improve traffic safety data, the other to identify the risk groups for accident and injury prevention. Cyclists have been the largest category of injured in recent years. The hospital reports cover about 85% of all traffic injuries requiring treatment which are known to police or hospitals. In 1983 a study was made to find the difference between police and hospital traffic injury statistics. It was found that police reports in goeteborg are relatively reliable regarding car drivers and passengers, but not regarding cyclists, reporting for whom was only 28%. A computerised system was set up in 1983 for coordinated recording of accidents reported to police and hospitals. The register now holds data regarding about 2200 traffic accidents reported in 1983. It has been possible to identify groups at special risk. Interviews have shown that there is serious lack of information regarding injury accidents. Car drivers and passengers with whiplash injuries are a considerable risk group who should receive better follow-up. Analyses will be made for medical-traumatological studies and biomechanical research.
