ROAD WEATHER REPORTS TO THE ROAD AUTHORITY

VEJMELDINGER TIL VEJHOLDER

"a vision of the information of the future for road authorities and road users regarding weather, road and traffic conditions" contains mainly an evaluation of the various information technology aids which have already been tested. Owing to rapid developments in electronics, there are increasing opportunities for better and less labour intensive surveillance of the road network. In order that the advantages conferred by the new technology may be utilised, it is essential that the information from measuring stations, TV cameras and other aids is processed and presented in an accessible manner. This is best done at special information centres whose areas of responsibility are so large that they can form a good idea of large scale weather conditions. The principal duty of these centres should be to issue tailor-made forecasts to local maintenance districts. They must also be able to transmit warnings in unexpected weather situations. Owing to the use of these aids, rationalisation gains have already been made since maintenance districts have been enabled to cover a larger road network without sacrificing winter maintenance quality. It is envisaged that in the longer term the information centres will be able to assume operative control of winter road maintenance overnight.
