BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF SHIPBOARD SANITARY WASTE WATER
This report is concerned with the biological treatment of shipboard waste water and the pollution problems caused by this waste water. The study evaluates two of the most efficient biological sanitary waste water treatment systems adaptable for shipboard use. It is recognized that such treatment plants are the most advantageous from a cost/benefit analysis, as opposed to purely mechanical/chemical units by as much as a 10:1-margin. The report also describes the characteristics of waste, sewage composition, biological treatments, regulation regarding the disposal of shipboard waste, and inland waterway problems. A study is performed on the necessity for waste treatment on different bodies of water and the limits to which the aqueous environment can be taxed with sanitary waste before its life supporting capabilities are exceeded.
