THE NEED OF SYSTEM ERGONOMICS FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL AND PASSENGER INFORMATION IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT. REPORT FROM TWO SURVEYS

BEHOV AV SYSTEMERGONOMISKA INSATSER FOER TRAFIKLEDNING OCH TRAFIKANTINFORMATION INOM KOLLEKTIVTRAFIK. RAPPORT FRAAN TVAA STUDIER

Advanced control or information technology will influence the design of future public transport systems. Consequently new job demands fall upon drivers, traffic control personnel and maintenance personnel. Also passengers will be influenced by new advanced information systems. As a result of these demands a good and functional design of such control and information systems will probably require the support of ergonomics, knowledge as well as tools, in order to balance the relationship between man and machine. In a pilot study which was sponsored by the Swedish transport research board and conducted during the winter season in 1987/88, the need for the support of ergonomics for the planning of traffic control and passenger information systems was investigated. Visits were paid to six Swedish traffic companies and to traffic control centres in Zurich and Frankfurt. Zurich and Frankfurt represent relatively advanced solutions of traffic control and passenger information systems. All six Swedish traffic companies that contributed to the study have expressed a need for the support of ergonomics when designing their work environment considering advanced control and information technology. The recommendation of this study is to develop a set of ergonomics guidelines. Such guidelines may be developed as a joint activity between several traffic companies. These recommendations should facilitate the allocation of automatic and manual functions, job design, work organization design and operator competence planning.
