MEASUREMENT OF COMPACTION RESULTS. EXPERIMENTAL OPERATION AT FOUR TEST LOCATIONS IN SWEDEN DURING THE PERIOD 1985-7

MAETNING AV KOMPRIMERINGSRESULTAT. FOERSOEKSVERKSAMHET PAA FYRA PROVPLATSER I SVERIGE UNDER PERIODEN 1985-87

During the period 1985-7 a comprehensive operation was carried out in Sweden to draw up documents to update the national road administration's construction instructions. The experiments had several objectives including a review of compaction obtained under current conditions, the criteria to be used for compaction requirements, tests of measuring methods, the development of proposals for compaction checks and the testing of these proposals. This paper deals with the measurement of compaction results obtained using compactometer, oscillometer, falling weight, isotope meter and water volume meter. Details are given of the results obtained with each type of equipment with the different materials tested which included several types of gravels, silts and sands. The results are discussed and presented diagramatically. The results from different measuring methods are compared and the relationship between changes in the solidity -stiffness in the base and degree of compaction in the compaction layer discussed. Water content is found to be the most important complicating factor. This publication was originally published in Swedish in vti meddelande, statens vaeg och trafikinstitut (vti), 1988, 577, P79-96.
