TUNNELLING TECHNOLOGY

A description is given of the technological aids that have been developed to assist in tunnelling work. Lasers are now an indispensable tool in the guidance of tunnelling machinery. A brief outline is given of zed instruments' system which will communicate position, attitude and predicted position to the tunnel boring machine (tbm) control cabin and to sites above ground and which can also include a package to implement corrections. High accuracy electronic theodolites are being used where there is little room for error. Wild heerbrugg's t2002 has an angle accuracy of 0.5 seconds of arc and includes a module for collecting field data. Sophisticated communications equipment developed by davis Derby to transmit speech, signals and control facilities are described. Examples are also given of davis derby's equipment designed to monitor the performance of underground plant and respond to emergencies. The problems of detecting toxic gases in the tunnelling environment are discussed including the effect of cold and damp on the instruments and the need for constant recalibration as the tunnel face advances.
