THE STATE OF PRESENT KNOWLEDGE AND DEVELOPMENT TRENDS IN THE RE-USE OF CONSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

ERKENNTNISSTAND UN ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN BEI DER WIEDERVERWENDUNG VON BAUSTOFFEN

Advances in the field of bituminous and cement-bound pavements are illustrated and evaluated against the background of legal environmental preservation regulations. The present state of the processing of the technical standards is explained with reference to quality assurance and the re-use of pavements. Three different types of re-use of pavement materials are discussed: a) the further use of bituminously and hydraulically bonded upper courses no longer safe for use; b) the partial use of reclaimed, processed, road building materials to produce high quality mixtures for new layers; and c) the use of reclaimed materials in unbonded load-bearing layers. Methods of reclaiming materials are discussed. Cold cutting, where binder properties are not changed is finding increasing use. Repaving and remixing methods, where the wearing course is removed, mixed with new material and relaid, are the most common because there is little need for new material and traffic disruption is slight. Factors affecting the combined use of reclaimed asphalt material in mixing plants are examined, and the use of bituminous excavated material without preparation in hot-mixing plants is discussed. The re-use of an existing broken up concrete wearing course to form the new load bearing course is described, the conditions when the use of crushed concrete as an aggregate can be economic are also examined.
