FINITE ELEMENTS ON A PC

In this article, two different programs for finite element stress analysis on personal computers are described: gifts, the graphical interaction finite element total system, and mtab, a pre and post processor for model generation and results display, using graphic features operating with the analysis program sap86. Mtab is a menu driven system; gifts is command driven, with over 500 commands and extensive help facilities. Development of model mesh generation facilities is an important advance in finite element analysis. Gifts provides within the package an integrated model generation system. In contrast the mtab program generates a model by first creating strings of nodes, and from the nodal mesh the interconnecting elements can be formed. The national agency for finite element methods and standards (nafesma), a government and industry supported organization, gives advice to new users of pc based programs.
