THE SINGLE EUROPEAN MARKET - CONSEQUENCES WITH RELATION TO MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT USED FOR TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION. SECOND INTERNATIONAL TUNNELLING SYMPOSIUM, MUNICH, 12 APRIL 1989

This paper (1) describes the harmonisation principles and provisions of the single European market, to be implemented by the end of 1992; (2) discusses some of their implications for machinery and equipment used for tunnel construction; and (3) reports on preparations for European standardisation for construction equipment and building material machines. The single market without trade barriers is still a major challenge for manufacturers and their customers, but also for institutions responsible for maintaining industrial health and safety standards. The remaining time before its implementation must be used intensively, and technically sensible and economically justifiable provisions must be developed. The essential features of the model safety level of German construction machinery, that has been attained already, must be retained in the interest of man and his environment. In West Germany, the industrial liability associations and their specialised committees have undertaken this task. It will be completed in close cooperation with manufacturers and users. The German title of this paper is as follows: "der europaeische binnenmarkt - auswirkungen auf maschinen und geraete des tunnelbaus". For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 824157.
