A SIMPLER METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF MICA IN MICACEOUS SOILS

This paper discusses the limitations and suitability of existing methods for measuring the mica content of a micaceous soil, and presents the simpler method developed at the central road research institute, New Delhi. The different methods of determining mica content include: (1) petrological analysis; (2) differential thermal analysis; (3) x-ray analysis; (4) chemical analysis; (5) sedimentation; (6) heavy liquid method; (7) flotation method; (8) vibratory method; (9) dielectric constant method. The dielectric constant method was chosen as the basis for the simplified method, and details are given of: (1) the method's principles; (2) the apparatus used; (3) investigations using the apparatus; (4) experimental procedure; (5) standardisation of the method; and (6) reproducibility of the results. Examples are given of the physical characteristics and mica content of various natural soils used in the study. Based on the work done, the authors conclude that: (1) the apparatus developed from the dielectric constant principle is suitable for determining the mica content of soils; and (2) the apparatus is easy to make, inexpensive, and can be used by a skilled worker in a field laboratory.
