A MATERIALS SCIENCE VIEW OF THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE
The various mechanical properties of concrete are discussed in this paper from a material science point of view. Starting with the internal structure of the material as the basis, different analytical models have been developed to simulate the macroscopic behaviour of the material. In the development of the models, some simplifications have been made and are discussed in detail. It is emphasised that the current state of knowledge does not permit a unified analytical approach to incorporate all the various aspects of behaviour of the material. However, since the basic concepts underlying each of the models discussed are not conflicting, it appears possible to eventually interrelate the models possibly at the expense of some complexity.
