CHEMICAL EMERGENCY ON A MOTORWAY. APPLICATION OF AN EXPERT SYSTEM

L'EMERGENZA CHIMICA IN AUTOSTRADA. APPLICAZIONE DI UNO SISTEMA ESPERTO

The complexity of motorway emergencies and of centralized traffic monitoring systems require the development of software to produce quick and efficient decisions. In situations where many factors are involved in extremely short times, it is very improbable that algorithms capable of formulating quick solutions can be developed. In such cases the constitution of an expert system could usefully integrate the mathematical modelling of the problem with the heuristics. In this article the application of expert systems to an emergency of chemical spillage on a motorway, is approached with the development of a prototype with a knowledge base derived from a "first intervention" manual. The main scope of the prototype is to evaluate the sources (toxicity, volatility, flammability, explosiveness) of dangers from the chemical substance and to advise the experts in the first phases of the emergency.
