ROADS FOR THE FUTURE. TRANSPORT COMMITTEE, MINUTES OF EVIDENCE, WEDNESDAY 19 APRIL 1989

In these minutes of evidence, the response made by Humberside county council to the transport committee's request for evidence on various subjects under the title "roads for the future" is set out. A proposal is made for the development of an East coast motorway, by extending the m11 motorway through the eastern counties, parallel to the a1 trunk road, connecting Cambridge to newcastle via the humber bridge. Humberside county council is part of a consortium of local authorities and private organisations, which is to undertake a major feasibility study on an East coast motorway. Notes on the proceedings of a seminar held in July 1988, between all interested groups are also given. Issues raised at the transport committee's examination of witnesses included: (1) private sector financing of the road, and establishing a toll road; (2) impact upon freight distribution; (3) impact upon traffic congestion and the rest of the road network; and (3) the development of trade, industry and tourism.
