HYBRID-BUS. BATTERY POWERED AND CHARGED DURING OPERATION. A PRELIMINARY STUDY FROM IM (SWEDISH INSTITUTE OF MICROELECTRONICS)

HYBRIDBUSS. MED BATTERIDRIFT OCH LADDNING UNDER GAANG. EN FOERSTUDIE UTFOERD VID INSTITUTET FOER MIKROELEKTRONIK

The study demonstrates that an electrically powered bus with battery, which is charged while the bus is operating, can provide an environmentally interesting alternative to the diesel-bus space technique of today. The operating cost is at the same level as for the diesel. The investment costs are reasonable and in any case lower than for so called trolley/combustion-duo-bus concepts or pure trolley operation. The study includes computer simulations of various drive-train alternatives. It also covers alternative engines such as stirling engine, steam engine and gas turbine. Fuel cells and rapid battery charge techniques are also covered. Further technical tests to obtain more knowledge are recommended. (Author/TRRL)
