BUCKLING OF SUSPENDED I-BEAMS

This is an investigation of the buckling behavior of symmetrically loaded, suspended, elastic I-beams. The paper outlines the problem by defining the support geometry and the location of loads, and derives the governing differential equations of minor axis flexure and torsion. Special boundary conditions at the cable supports are examined. The paper also describes experiments on a series of suspended small-scale aluminum I-beams, and the results are demonstrated to verify the theory. The paper then presents a theoretical study of suspended I-beams with selected nondimensional properties that illustrates the influence of some of the many variables on the buckling load.
