GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCEMENT OF PAVED ROAD EMBANKMENTS ON POLYGONAL GROUND

Recent research on the use of a geosynthetic to fully support an unpaved road over a void is noted. These projects included developing a theory to design the geosynthetic and performing full-scale load tests. The theory, described in detail elsewhere, was developed into a computer program. Different (24) test sections were used to verify the theory wich indicated that commercialy available geosynthetics could be used to support roads across voids of 10 ft or more in width. The full-scale tests substantiated the theory to widths of at least 6 ft. This paper reports 4 additional field test sections which like the earlier tests, consisted of making a trench, placing a geosynthetic across it, and constructing a road section over the trench and geosynthetic. These materials provide the possibility of reinforcing road sections over thermokarst terrain that includes complete voids.
