FEM ANALYSIS OF ELASTIC STRESS DISTRIBUTIONS IN EMBANKMENTS. DISCUSSION
This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by Y.B. Acar, H. Hilal, and M.T. Tumay, published in Volume 114, No. 6 of this Journal. This discussion considers a solution for the stresses within and beneath an elastic trapezoidal embankment supported on a weightless elastic foundation by Perloff et al. 1967. It shows that based on a review of the underlying theory, and the comparisons with other solutions, the theory utilized by Perloff et al. is fundamentally correct in every respect. In important cases, however, finite element analysis incorporating nonlinear constitutive relations for the soil, and allowing for embankments constructed in layers with different stiffness than the foundation soils should be utilized.
