AIR POLLUTION DUE TO TRAFFIC IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The air pollution problem caused by mobile sources in industrialized countries has been studied to a considerable extent. On the contrary there are only a few published studies for the case of developing countries. Therefore it is interesting to compare the nature, origin and possible solutions to this problem in urban areas belonging to both types of countries. Some of the most important features in non-industrialized countries are: most of motor vehicles are concentrated in the bigger cities, population is also concentrated there and is growing at an annual rate of more than 5%. So the number of individuals exposed to air pollution is very high. Also these individuals health standards are usually poor. In this study first the main characteristics of motor vehicle air pollution are given; then using UNEP data and some given studies the specific features of developing countries are analyzed from traffic, emissions, dispersion and biological standpoints. In order to sensibilize the users to the environmental problem which can become major in the future megalopolis the setting up of control measures is suggested.
