AASHTO'S HIGHWAY SAFETY PLAN REVEALS STARTLING STATISTICS

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) "Highway Safety Strategic Plan, 1991-2000", was accepted by more than two-thirds of the members of its Policy Committee. The plan suggests increasing federal safety funds by $940 million. It reveals that although fatal accident rates have been declining over the past few years, the total number of highway deaths have been steadily increasing since 1983, over 500,000 Americans will die on the nation's highways, over $1.2 trillion will be lost in highway accidents and that one in every 19 children born this decade will die, be permanently disabled or suffer a life-threatening injury as a result of a highway accident.
