DOMESTIC TURMOIL: THE CONTAINER'S ROLE
Double-stack containers are gaining on trailers as the way to go for intermodal transportation. However, the industry is still divided as to the future of domestic containerization. Railroads such as Burlington Northern, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific Transportation Co. and Union Pacific are turning to containerization more and more. An estimated investment of some $4 billion will be needed, if these methods take hold. Many questions still loom such as who will do the marketing and whether or not the railroads can lure enough business away from the highways to make it worthwhile?
