Computer-aided engineering (CAE) can be an invaluable tool to manufacturers. This is especially so, now that the Urban Mass Transportation Administration is requiring that all mass transportation vehicles requiring the use of UMTA funds for their purchase, submit to a series of tests at the Bus Testing Facility in Altoona, Pennsylvania. CAE technology can carry out computer simulations of some of these tests before manufacturers have completed the vehicle. This would eliminate the need for them to go back and make the nececssary changes to the vehicle. Using finite element analysis, the vehicle's structural strength and durability can also be tested.
