MOBILE HOTMIX HOPPER SPEEDS SHOULDER PAVING
A mobile hopper is being used to convey hotmix to an asphalt paver on the shoulder from haul trucks on the concrete slab for construction of the shoulders of the new 10,000-ft runway and taxiway being placed at the Indianapolis International Airport. The shoulders are 35 ft wide for 2000 ft at each end of the 150-ft-wide runway, and 12 ft wide along the 6,000-ft middle section. Both sides of the 75-ft-wide 10,000-ft-long taxiway are receiving 35-ft-wide shoulders. A Barber-Greene MTD-3000 material transfer vehicle (MTV) is used to maintain a supply buffer for the paver. With the combination of the MTV, the special hopper, and the cooperation of traffic to permit a steady supply of trucks, the paver can proceed continuously. Non-stop paving boosts production and yields a better mat. Further details are provided in this article.
