CONCRETE DOMES FOR WATER AND WASTEWATER TANKS

Design and construction practices for typical cast-in-place concrete and precast concrete domes used to cover large water and wastewater storage tanks are described. Available consensus standards and reports are referenced. Minimum dome thichnesses required for adequate buckling resistance of uniform cast-in-place concrete spherical domes, precast concrete domes with various joints, and ribbed concrete domes are given. Stress resultants for membrane and edge-bendng effects are summarized for the usual types of loading. Experience from condition surveys of old concrete or shotcrete domes is summarized. Recommendations are given for cost-effective design of concrete domes over water and wstewater tanks.
