MINNESOTA STUDIES SHOW BENEFITS OF DEICER
Experiments with alternative deicing products by the Minnesota Department of Transportation have shown significant reduction in corrosion over a 3-year period. Soduium chloride with an anticorrosive additive was extensively field tested with primary emphasis on ice melting effectiveness, handling characteristicse and corrosion reduction. The product, marketed under the name CG-90 Anticorrosive Deicer, and used on the Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge, contains a patented corrosion inhibitor that forms a protective barrier on exposed metal surfaces. Prior to field testing, MnDOT performed a number of laboratory tests. Eight different deicers are being tested by the MnDOT and including the ongoing tests on the CG-90 as well as two new CG-90 formulations.
