UNTANGLING A CAN OF WORMS
The improvement is described of the capacity of the major interchange between I-490 and I/New York 590 near Rochester. The interchange has substandard at-grade intersections between the two interstates and troublesome short weaving distances. The project includes reconstruction of approximately 2 miles eastbound and 2.3 mile westbound and 1 mile southbound of I-590, 5.2 mile of ramps, 2.4 mile of city streets, and construction of 15 new bridges. Reconstruction includes demolition of 14 bridges and excavation of over 925,000 cu yards of concrete. Details of the streamlined design are described. Computer aided design and drafting (CADD) helped save time during the accelerated design process.
