PEDESTRIANISATION GUIDELINES

The objectives of these guidelines are to: a) assist those who are contemplating pedestrianisation to decide how to proceed; and b) set out issues that need to be taken into account in developing a scheme. Such issues include: a) the movement of pedestrians and vehicles; b) provision for vehicles such as buses, emergency services, cyclists, delivery and service vehicles, and residents' cars; C) legislation; d) enforcement of regulations; and E) maintenance. Guidance on good design practice is also provided, with sections on United Kingdom specifications and standards, maintenance, surface requirements, drainage, street furniture, scale, colour, and texture, signing, lighting, and the subdivision of space. These guidelines are confined to the consideration of requirements of pedestrianisation in town centre streets and shopping centres. They concentrate on the conversion of existing town centre shopping streets, rather than on the design of new purpose built shopping malls. (TRRL)
