NOISE HINDRANCE IN THE NETHERLANDS; TEN YEARS AFTERWARDS

GELUIDHINDER IN NEDERLAND; TIEN JAAR LATER

This report answers the following questions: (a) how many Dutch citizens are annoyed by several specified noise sources?; (b) to what extent do these noise resources cause annoyance? And (c) how do these results compare with those of 1977? The annoyance caused by 95 different noise sources were surveyed. 4072 face-to-face interviews were conducted in a representative sample of the Dutch population. Summarizing the most important categories, in-home noise, both from neighbours and from one's own home, appeared to be by far the most widespread source of annoyance. In the year preceding the survey it had caused severe annoyance in forty percent of the population. Surface bound traffic and aircraft noise followed with twenty and fifteen percent of the sample respectively severely annoyed. The most annoying sources of surface bound traffic noise appeared to be mopeds and motorbikes, lorries, and passenger cars. Compared with the results of a nearly identical survey carried out in 1977, it was concluded that annoyance (to any degree, ranging from slightly to severely annoyed) had increased substantially.
