MOTIVATION OF DRIVING SPEED ON ACCESS ROADS

MOTIVATIE VAN DE RIJSNELHEID OP ONTSLUITINGSWEGEN

This report described an explanatory study undertaken to ascertain why any particular driving speed was developed on access roads in residential areas. A literature search was carried out to identify the factors which might influence speed levels. The vast number of variables thus identified were classified according to importance and the most important of these selected for further study. The variables used were: reason(s) for undertaking the journey; journey length; driver's age; the width of the traffic lane; visibility distance; pavement surface texture; traffic direction and police control. A model was developed which analysed the development of a particular speed level from the driving task angle and which introduced an anticipatory speed factor. The results obtained using this model were evaluated by: (a) measuring the real speed by radar; and (B) interviewing the driver directly after the radar measurement. No relevant relationship was found between speed and any of the variables tested. (TRRL)
