COGNITIVE MODELS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT USE IN THE AGGLOMERATION OF ROTTERDAM

COGNITIEVE MODELLEN VOOR OPENBAAR VERVOERGEBRUIK IN DE AGGLOMERATIE ROTTERDAM

The aims of this study were to: (a) describe the attitudes towards five public transport systems of groups of persons who differ with regard to the frequency of public transport use, car availability, and a number of socio-economic characteristics; (b) model public transport, car and bicycle use, with specific attention to both cognitive variables such as beliefs, attitudes, preferences and intentions, and to objective characteristics of transport systems, such as travel time, time to travel to the public transport stop. The data used were collected during a study, carried out by the consultancy bureau for the Directorate General of Transportation and the Public Transport Company of the City of Rotterdam, the RET, in the conurbation of Rotterdam. Public transport systems included in the study are the city-bus, tram, underground, train and the regional bus. Cognitive variables, especially beliefs, preferences and intentions, mostly accounted for travel mode choice. The objective characteristics that influenced the choice between public transport and car use to some degree are: time to travel from the public transport stop to the destination; the number of transfers; and the trouble it takes to find a parking space. The choice between public transport and the bicycle appeared to be determined predominantly by travel distance. The relationship between objective characteristics and cognitive variables appeared to be very weak. The addenda are presented in a separate report. (TRRL)
