HEALTH HAZARD EVALUATION/TOXICITY DETERMINATION REPORT H.H.E. 74-144-211, SAFEGUARD AUTOMOTIVE COMPANY, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

A plant which rebuilds and reconditions automobile generators and starters was investigated by NIOSH to evaluate employee exposure to mineral spirits and sodium hydroxide in two cleaning procedures. Environmental air samples were obtained and non-directed medical questionnaires were administered to employees. It was determined that employee exposures to mineral spirits and sodium hydroxide are not toxic at concentrations usually encountered by employees, but that some potentially toxic exposures may exist during maintenance procedures.
