RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF NON-MOTORWAYS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS. PRELIMINARY SPECIFICATIONS: ALIGNMENT
RICHTLIJNEN VOOR HET ONTWERPEN VAN NIET-AUTOSNELWEGEN BUITEN DE BEBOUWDE KOM. VOORLOPIGE RICHTLIJNEN: ALIGNMENT
These specifications on road alignment describe the technical process in the design of the geometrical layout of the highway. The geometrical shape of a road stretch is determined by the curvature, which is given in two projections (horizontal and vertical alignments). The horizontal and vertical alignments are determined by the function of the road, the landscape, geography, and geological circumstances etc. The road user's picture of the road and traffic together are the source of information needed for the execution of the driver's task. A uniformity of dimensions of design elements leads to greater traffic safety. The relationship between road driver and vehicle is the basis of this directive. It is built on existing knowledge and on recent developments. If no research data were available then suppositions were used, based on experience and calculations. The suppositions will have to be proven by further studies, and tested in practice. Then the specifications will possibly be adapted.
