ALCOHOL USE BY CAR DRIVERS 1988
ALCOHOLGEBRUIK VAN AUTOMOBILISTEN 1988
Nine surveys were carried out in the Netherlands in the period from 1970-1988, in order to make an inventory of drunken driving by car-drivers. In this study, the results of 1988 are presented, and compared with data taken from the 1987 survey. In September, October and November, during week-ends from 22.00-4.00 h, 2663 car-drivers were stopped and checked for alcohol use by the police. Some questions were asked about drinking and driving habits at the same time. Comparisons with 1987 show that there was a significant decrease in the number of drivers with a BAC (blood alcohol content) of greater than 0.5 promille. The legal limit in the Netherlands is 0.5 promille. The decrease was mainly attributed to female drivers and drivers who came from a bar or a party. The decrease was stronger in the eastern and northern parts of the Netherlands than in the southern and western parts. One out of nine drivers who are driving while over the alcohol limit has been stopped over the last 6 months by the police for a BAC test. Most of them were permitted to drive on without any form of warning or sanction. In general, these drivers considered the chance to be stopped for a BAC test during the week-end as not very high. Drivers who reported that the chance is high, or said they did not know, were more likely to have a BAC greater than 0.5 promille than the former group. Finally, drivers were asked about the number of glasses people can drink before they reach the legal limit and about their own limit. Drivers with a BAC over 0.5 promille responded more often with a high number of glasses or did not know an answer to these questions.
