THE ROLE OF THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD SAFETY ORGANISATION PRI IN IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

This paper presents the general strategy and activities of PRI, the International Road Safety Organisation, and its specific programme for developing countries. This includes: (1) raising the awareness of public authorities about the scope and importance of road accidents and road safety; (2) assisting the organisation of international cooperation on road safety; (3) obtaining information about the relevant characteristics of specific countries; (4) adapting the legislation, regulations and design of public transport systems; (5) improving traffic and road safety education and training; (6) applying road safety considerations to urban and rural transport planning; (7) increasing the efficiency of emergency services, by improving communications and transport systems and training first aid workers; (8) improving the collection of accident data; (9) helping to set up cost-effective national road safety programmes; (10) surveying the situation before and after introducing the programme; (11) evaluating the conclusions of experimental road safety projects, and adapting them for introduction in other countries; (12) integrating proved safety programmes into PRI's data base for general application; (13) developing a medium-term research programme, based on experience and aiming to achieve PRI's objective "MINUS 30 PER CENT ACCIDENTS", which it set on its 30th anniversary; and (14) organisation of a round table conference, aiming to implement this programme and provide direct assistance on road safety to developing countries.
