EXPERT SYSTEMS AND COMPUTERS IN THE TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

EXPERTSYSTEMEN EN COMPUTERS IN DE VERKEERSOPVOEDING IN HET VOORTGEZET ONDERWIJS

the role of computers in primary and secondary school is increasing. traffic education can reach large numbers of pupils individually by using dedicated software. new software is needed and will be made. the "fietsplan" program is such a program. its purpose is to increase both the declarative and procedural traffic knowledge of pupils from 12-15 years old. educational goals and their premises are discussed respectively. the software implementation of the functional representation of the traffic environment on a standard personal computer (pc) is investigated. in this research, the following question has been answered: are standard personal computers fast enough and can programs be made 'smart' enough (efficient) to dynamically represent traffic objects (cars and cyclists) on an intersection (seen in an aerial view) with all objects interacting with each other online (in real time). it is concluded that a functional, dynamic representation is possible on a pc, a finding which may have consequences for future software and scientific research. sample programs can be run from the enclosed floppy disk. the advantages of the use of a computer simulated traffic environment, such as the possibility to manipulate the frequency of occurence of certain types of dangerous situations, are hard to estimate. the speed of learning, the change in learning processes and the resulting traffic behaviour should be subject of empirical research.
