A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOIL IMPROVEMENT/REINFORCEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS. FINAL REPORT
The rapid industrialization and urbanization of Louisiana results in an ever growing effort to improve and expand the local and interstate highway systems. The increasing costs of rights-of-way and the necessity to construct embankments on marginal sites with poor foundation soils has created a critical need for a feasibility evaluation of technically attractive and cost-effective soil improvement/reinforcement techniques for highway embankment construction. This study has primarily for objective the evaluation of a variety of soil improvement techniques which have emerged and been used to improve the stability of the embankment slopes, increase the bearing capacity of poor foundation soil, minimize differential settlements and reduce construction time. The available techniques have been broadly classified into two categories based upon the resisting mode of the inclusion: (1) Compression and/or shear resisting elements, including: (a) stone and cemented compacted sand columns, (b) dynamically compacted large granular columns, (c) in-situ lime-stabilized columns, and (d) jet grouted/compaction grouted inclusions; and (2) Tension resisting elements including geotextiles and geogrids. A thorough review of the current state of design and practice of these new geotechnologies has been conducted to develop preliminary selection criteria and design guidelines for potential use in typical sites of poor foundation soils in Louisiana.
