FATALITY TRENDS: TRUCKS
This is the fifteenth and last of a series of occasional brief reports on highway traffic fatality trends in the United States. The data are from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) and the subject area covered is trucks. The truck size categories, with "Light Truck or Van" being the smallest and "Tractor" being the largest, are based on body type rather than weight. The portion of total traffic fatalities that are in light truck or van accidents has risen from 17.5% in 1975 to 27% in 1986, an increase of 55% in eleven years. The portion in tractor truck accidents has been 9 or 10% since 1976. Statistics are also presented by accident type (single vehicle or multivehicle) and by victim role (non-occupant or occupant of a particular vehicle type).
