IMPACT OF DRIVER'S LICENSE SUSPENSION ON EMPLOYMENT STABILITY OF DRUNKEN DRIVERS
This study compares the employment characteristics (e.g., incidence of unemployment, length of unemployment, and number of jobs in the previous year) of a group of DUI (driving under the influence) offenders who experienced driver's license suspension to a control group of recently arrested DUI offenders who were not suspended during the comparable time period. Also studied were the associations between case disposition and antecedents such as income, race, sex, age, and employment status. In summary, results suggest that license suspension is likely to have relatively little impact on employment stability among DUI offenders as a group. Results underscore the perception of offenders that a DUI arrest and license suspension are costly events, both personally and financially. Findings support earlier suggestions that the mechanism by which license suspension reduces accidents is an across the board reduction in risk exposure rather than selective reduction in high risk driving.
