EQUIPMENT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF AGGREGATES AND COATED MATERIALS. SINO-BRITISH HIGHWAYS AND URBAN TRAFFIC CONFERENCE. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN BEIJING 17TH-22ND NOVEMBER 1986

This paper describes some of the equipment and several of the processes available for converting raw materials from quarries into high quality aggregates and mixtures suitable for use in the surfaces of first class roads. The three most important stages of aggregate processing are: (1) crushing and screening; (2) mixing and coating; (3) laying and compacting. The crushing and screening process usually uses a primary crusher, a secondary crusher, and a screening unit. The four types of secondary crusher available are: (1) granulators; (2) impactors; (3) cone crushers; (4) rolls crushers. The four types of crushing plants are (1) fixed installations, set up on permanent sites; (2) transportable plants, consisting of standard and semi-standard units arranged so that the whole plant can be moved from one site to another; (3) mobile plant, consisting of standard units on wheels that can be moved easily between sites; (4) single chassis units, for easy to medium crushing tasks. In order to meet the requirements for a wide range of mixes, there are several types of equipment for the drying, heating, and mixing process, including: (1) rotary dryer mixing plants; (2) batch heater plants; (3) mixer plants; (4) burners; (5) dust collection systems. Nearly all types of plant have facilities for reclaiming old road materials, based on asphalt and bitumen, and reusing them to provide a surfacing material as good as new at much reduced cost.
