ROCK CUTTINGS - BRITISH EXPERIENCE. SINO-BRITISH HIGHWAYS AND URBAN TRAFFIC CONFERENCE. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN BEIJING 17TH-22ND NOVEMBER 1986
This paper briefly reviews current United Kingdom practice in rock cuttings for highways, with special reference to some recent developments. These advances include developments in investigation, design, construction, and monitoring, which are intended to improve the performance and economy of rock cuttings. The paper concentrates on the harder rocks which form most of the West side of Great Britain; they are mainly the older sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Investigations for road construction start with preliminary studies, including desk studies and geological mapping, and proceed to more detailed investigations, including discontinuity surveys and ground explorations such as boreholes, trial excavations, and geophysical traverses. Rock slope design methods have evolved greatly in the last decade; of these, the paper discusses especially: (1) preliminary design using stereographic projection; (2) more rigorous design using stability analyses; (3) design approach for minimum maintenance. In excavation, there have been recent improvements in blasting, ripping, and the use of excavated rock. Measures used in the United Kingdom for rock cutting support can be grouped mainly into anchoring, walling, and netting. Monitoring and inspection of rock cuttings has been applied mainly to examine rock condition, rock movement, and ground water. Recent developments in the investigation, design, construction, and monitoring of rock cuttings have improved their economy and long-term stability. (TRRL)
