CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. SINO-BRITISH HIGHWAYS AND URBAN TRAFFIC CONFERENCE. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN BEIJING 17TH-22ND NOVEMBER 1986

Concrete pavements continue to provide a competitive and viable alternative to flexible pavement construction in the United Kingdom. This paper discusses various aspects of the design, specification and construction of concrete pavements. The four types of concrete pavement are: (1) jointed unreinforced concrete pavement; (2) jointed reinforced concrete pavement; (3) continuously reinforced concrete pavement; (4) continuously reinforced concrete roadbase with bituminous surfacing. The design of subgrade layer, sub-base, separation membrane, and concrete slab are described. The specification of concrete and reinforcement are outlined. Details are given of the construction methods used for the four types of concrete pavement. The author concludes that some earlier problems with joints and riding quality have now been overcome, and that there is sufficient design expertise across a range of techniques to provide good quality, durable concrete roads.
