JOINT VENTURES. SINO-BRITISH HIGHWAYS AND URBAN TRAFFIC CONFERENCE. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN BEIJING 17TH-22ND NOVEMBER 1986
This paper discusses joint ventures as the most successful way of transferring technology between Britain and China; a joint venture is a partnership in which both sides have a stake, and it can be likened to a marriage. The following questions, arising in joint ventures between Britain and China, are discussed: (1) why does China want a joint venture? (2) why does Britain want a joint venture? (3) do the individual British and Chinese representatives realise that they have different political, ideological, and cultural backgrounds, which they both need to study before they can understand each other? (4) how will both groups of representatives communicate with each other, bearing in mind the differences between their written and spoken languages? The answers to these questions concern the basic requirements for setting up a joint venture and the problems in establishing it and making it work, together with a brief consideration of the financial arrangements. Some specific remarks are made about joint ventures in the construction of roads, bridges, and dams. Some of the unique contributions that Britain can make to joint ventures in China are considered. Finally, the best ways of starting a joint venture are discussed. (TRRL)
