THE ROLE OF THERMO-OXIDATIVE AGEING IN THE LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF GEOTEXTILES. DURABILITY OF GEOTEXTILES
This article presented results of experiments that showed the effect of thermo-oxidative ageing upon the durability of polypropylene (PP) geotextiles. The effects upon such ageing of iron compounds, and the leaching effects of sea water upon the antioxidants used to stabilize these geotextiles was also studied. Long term constant load tensile stress tests to failure were conducted at 90 deg C and 110 deg c upon 2 samples of PP splitfilm yarns (1900 Tex). These showed that at low loads, the thermo-oxidative stability of the polypropylene was the overruling determining factor for the durability of the PP fabric. Oven tests to evaluate thermo-oxidative ageing were carried out at a large range of different temperatures using lengths of PP yarn or specimens of pp fabric. The time needed to cause embrittlement and mechanical failure of each specimen (the oven life) was established. These oven life values were extrapolated to obtain an estimate of the embrittlement time at normal temperatures, and the arzrhenius formula relating embrittlement time to absolute temperature was obtained. The leaching resistances of various anti-oxidant packages used to stabilize geotextiles were also studied by immersing the geotextiles in sea water for 9 years, and then measuring the amount of anti-oxidant left. These tests showed that certain anti-oxidants were completely washed out after this period. The effect of ferric oxide deposition upon thermo-oxidative ageing was also studied and found to have an adverse effect. (TRRL)
